Winemaking notes
100% whole berry fermentation (Cabernet Sauvignon 80 %) and 100% whole cluster fermentation (Syrah 20 %) Grape percentages vary in each vintage. Native yeasts are used for fermentation. A duration of 42 days on skins. The wine spends 65% in new French barriques for a time period of 21 months barrel-aged on lees.
Viticultural notes
100 % of the grapes are from the Stoneridge Vineyard which rests above the flood plain of the Columbia River. Under the topsoil is a layer of caliche and basalt 6-12’’ deep, creating a calcium and iron rich media that forces roots to struggle. The vineyards are farmed using the most up to date sustainable practices.
Tasting notes
Bursting with aromas of ripe cherries, licorice and sweet tobacco. Full-bodied and lavishly textural, its ripe but succulent core of fruit delivers a very vibrant and composed feel with dark berries, laced with lightly roasted coffee.
Pairing notes
2020 - 98 Wine Advocate - Mainly Cabernet, the 2020 King Coal is firmer, darker and fresh with notes of pencil shavings and a juicy and generous core of spicy dark fruits, with delicate dusty red flowers, delightful brown baking spices and dark berries. Full-bodied, fresh and still tight, it will go the distance; just be patient. Made from 100% whole-cluster grapes, the wine aged in 60% new French oak for 22 months. Bravo! 97JD, 97JS
