Winemaking notes
As we grow, opportunities present themselves from time to time to take on new properties via lease or long-term contract. Some of these vineyards are located south of the Kawarau River and are leased back to us by the founding partners, and so still qualify for our Bannockburn wines. However, those outside of Bannockburn are used to produce Roaring Meg wines. All of these satellite vineyards are located in the Cromwell basin and all are cared for on a day to day basis by our viticulture team. At almost 80 hectares, they make up close to half of the vineyard area available to Mt Difficulty Wines.
Viticultural notes
The majority of the fruit was destemmed to enhance the natural fruit characters of Pinot Noir from the Cromwell Basin. A small proportion was retained as whole cluster, with the aim of building texture and structure. The grapes stayed in the fermenter on average for a total of 19-21 days. The wine was plunged once daily both during pre-fermentation and during fermentation. Pressed off to French oak, it resided on lees for 10 months
Tasting notes
Roaring Meg Pinot Noir 2021 is deep, dark, and dense with notes of red and black cherry, red currant, and a touch of baking spice. This leads into an opulent palate full of boysenberry, strawberry, and black cherry fruit. A touch of cinnamon and star anise spice from the oak balances the wine. A long finish flows through with silky tannins.
