A true part of Newfoundland’s tradition. Screech Rum has been imported from Jamaica for over 200 years. In the early days, they were not overly concerned with alcohol content. This product use to be bottled unlabeled but as the story goes, a visiting American World War II serviceman downed the rum in one quick shot. His screams of distress brought the attention of bystanders who heard him howl, “What the cripes was that ungodly Screech?!”

A LONG TRADITION

The history of Newfoundland has been described as "a long battle between rum and religion.” In the early days, the fisherman used to drink the Rum at a very high strength being not too concerned with alcohol content which continued for generations.

THE JAMAICAN CONNECTION

THE JAMAICAN CONNECTION

Over two centuries ago fish was being shipped to the West Indies from the Newfoundland area in exchange for Rum. This resulted in fish being a national dish for Jamaicans and Rum becoming a staple for Newfoundlanders.

PUCKER UP

A traditional Newfoundland Screech Ceremony involves the kissing of a cod. The kissing of a cod meant to wish one bon voyage for those who were sailing South and returning with the rum. Foreigners who do this are considered "Screeched In".
