Winemaking notes
Each grape variety is hand-picked separately. Vinification takes place in truncated wooden vats for the reducing grape varieties (Syrah, Mourvèdre) and in traditional concrete and enamelled stoneware vats for the oxidative grape varieties (Grenache). Following malolactic fermentation, the Perrin family blend the different grape varieties, then age the wine in oak foudres for a year before bottling.
Viticultural notes
Château de Beaucastel has long been considered one of France's finest wines. The appellation's thirteen grape varieties have been organically grown here since the 1960s. The terroir is archetypal of the great Châteauneuf terroirs: rolled pebbles on the surface, clay, sand and limestone at depth. Beaucastel grows all thirteen grape varieties authorized by the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation.
Tasting notes
Almost black in color. Very fine yet powerful nose of red fruit, blackcurrant, blackberry, spices, thyme and lavender. Magnificent attack on the palate, full and supple. Figs, cherries, blackberries, stewed fruit... are supported by fine acidity. Tannins are present but extremely fine. A great Beaucastel vintage. 94/100 Decanter 18/20 Jancis Robinson
