Winemaking notes
Vinified at the Quinta da Leda winery and produced using grapes sourced from the same estate, as well as other high-altitude vineyards in the Douro Superior. After destemming, the grapes were transferred to stainless steel tanks where alcoholic fermentation ensued. A long and gentle maceration subsequently took place at controlled temperatures with a view to extracting the compounds that give it its colour, aroma, flavour and longevity. The wine aged in French oak barrels for a period of roughly 18 months. The final blend was made further to meticulous inspection of the best wines, and numerous tests and analysis during this period on the different lots and barrels. In this selection process lies the "secret" of Barca-Velha. In order to preserve the highest possible quality, the wine was only subject to filtration prior to bottling.
Viticultural notes
2015 was a dry year with March recording half the expected precipitation and temperatures above normal from April to May. June and July were very hot, but soil water availability and foliage management allowed for a regular, even pattern. The vegetative cycle was 1 to 2 weeks early, yet the thermal amplitudes in August and September enabled balanced ripening, preserving elegance and harmony.
Tasting notes
A deep ruby colour, Barca-Velha is an incredibly intense and complex wine with predominantly shrubby notes of olive leaf and olive paste, alongside black fruit, spices, black pepper, cedar and tobacco box. It has a touch of minerality and a discrete, well-integrated wood element. Powerful on the palate, it has a vibrant acidity, lively tannins and further notes of spices and red fruit, which invite a lingering finish of great elegance.
Pairing notes
Decant at least 1-2 hours before serving to breathe and separate sediment (after keeping bottle upright for 24 hours). Recommended temperature: 16ºC to 18ºC. Drink within 24 hours of opening. This wine pairs wonderfully with cheeses, red meat dishes and game.
